HISTORY
Interfaith Social Services was established in 1947 as a cooperative effort of Protestant churches in Quincy to provide much needed counseling and child placement services for children in trouble. It was first called the Protestant Community Service.  From the beginning its services have been available to persons of all backgrounds and beliefs.

In 1957, the name was changed to Protestant Social Service Bureau and the service area expanded to include ten communities on the South Shore.  Much of its support came from the Protestant churches in those towns.

Over the years many programs have been developed to meet the needs of varying populations.  One of the largest current programs, the Pantry Shelf, was started in 1975 to provide food to people in need.  Although a professional counseling program has always been an important part of the Agency’s service, ISS has also done what it can to meet clients’ more immediate needs such as the need for food, clothing and financial assistance.

ISS is proud of the fact that its small staff is augmented by over 200 volunteers.  Many are involved in direct client service in the Pantry Shelf, the Career Closet, the Bureau Drawer and the Faith in Action program. Others are active as office volunteers, in our fund raising events and serve on our Board of Directors and its committees.

In 1998, recognizing that support for the ISS programs was coming from other faith communities the Agency chose the name Interfaith Social Services, Inc.

SUPPORT
Support for the Agency comes from a variety of sources including gifts from individuals, faith communities, businesses, organizations and foundations. In addition several fund raising events are held throughout the year.
